Work description

An icon from the Sovereign tier of the iconostasis of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at the Maniava Skete Monastery (in scholarly literature, the iconostasis is also known as the Bohorodchany iconostasis).

At the center of the composition is a half-length depiction of Christ Pantocrator, who holds an open book in his left hand and blesses with his right.

The background is decorated with a stylized vegetal ornament carved in gesso, and gilded.

The icon is set in a deep decorative frame that forms part of the structure of the iconostasis. Along the perimeter of the inner part of the frame are oval medallions depicting the 12 Apostles, the Virgin Mary, and John the Baptist; above them is a Hebrew inscription carved in gesso: וח וח (Yahweh).
