Yov Kondzelevych (1667 – c. 1747)
An icon from the Sovereign tier of the iconostasis of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at the Maniava Skete Monastery (in literature, the iconostasis is also known as the Bohorodchany iconostasis).
At the center of the composition is a half-length depiction of the Virgin Mary of the Hodegetria iconographic type. The Virgin is turned to the right; with her right hand, Mary points to Jesus Emmanuel, whom she holds on her left arm. Jesus blesses with his right hand and supports a closed book with his left.
The background is decorated with a stylized vegetal ornament carved in gesso, and gilded.
The icon is set in a deep decorative frame that forms part of the structure of the iconostasis. Along the perimeter of the inner part of the frame are depictions of 16 Old Testament prophets and kings in oval medallions; above them is the Ark of the Covenant.
