Work description

An icon from the Deesis tier, originally belonging to the iconostasis of the Church of the Nativity of Christ in Zhovkva.

Saint Volodymyr, Equal-to-the-Apostles and Grand Prince of Kyivan Rus’, is depicted full-length, wearing a long dalmatic decorated with patterns and trimmed with fur at the top, and red shoes; on his head is a mitre-shaped crown. The saint holds the attributes of power: a golden orb in his left hand and a scepter in his right.

The background is decorated with a vegetal ornament carved in gesso, and gilded. In the upper left part of the icon is a red inscription: “St Volodymyr the Great.”
